Bring your baby, relax and revitalise in this supportive class. Yoga is a wonderful way for mothers to look after themselves in the months after birth. The classes aim to regenerate flagging energy and provide time for mothers to nurture themselves. We will practise mindful breathing with yoga positions that gently stretch and rebalance the body, undo tension and combat fatigue.
Physically, it takes about six months for the mother's body to fully recover from pregnancy and childbirth. During this time mothers need to be careful how they exercise. Postnatal yoga classes are designed specifically for the postnatal months to help the body regain strength and tone in a safe and effective way. Special attention is paid to re-toning muscles of the abdomen and pelvic floor. Specific exercises strengthen the lower back and release accumulated tension in the shoulders and upper back from so much holding, nursing and carrying.
Each class is split into two parts: for the first 45 mins to 1 hour the mothers take part on their own (while the babies are cared for by childminders) and the babies join their mothers for the last part of the class. We also give guidance about diet & nutrition, and stress management, with helpful “top tips” hand-outs.
Who can attend post-natal yoga? All new mothers and their babies can enjoy the benefits of post-natal yoga up to about 6 months after birth. Quite naturally, as a new mother you devote most of your time and energy to caring for your baby and this can leave you feeling drained, depressed and overwhelmed at times. It is not unusual for some mothers to feel low self-esteem and stress with the upheaval of having a new family member and the life changing experience of bringing up young children. This can also lead to poor diet, weight problems, stressed-out mums & dads.
Post-natal yoga is the perfect antidote, bringing a sense of wellbeing and equilibrium. It alleviates tiredness and aches and pains, maintains good posture and reminds mothers to relax. Introducing the babies into the second part of the class allows mothers to share the benefits of yoga with their babies and encourages bonding.
